Introduction

Improving the shape of the nose can dramatically enhance the face. Some patients desire a complete change while others wish for subtle refinement. Anyone who is self-conscious about his or her nose will find that a Rhinoplasty (nose job) offers a newfound aura of confidence. The procedure can significantly enhance an individual’s facial appearance by creating a more graceful nose and an enhanced profile. We customize the Rhinoplasty to uniquely complement each individual’s face, whether the goal is to remove a bump, taper the tip, or in some cases, build up nasal depressions.

Many consider the rhinoplasty to be the most difficult operation in Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Schneider considers it one of his favorites. The nose is made up of bone, muscle, cartilage, soft tissue and similar to a tripod, the change in one structure must be balanced with the change in the others to produce harmony.

The Procedure

Dr. Schneider performs the Rhinoplasty surgery with the patient asleep with a general anesthetic in our AAAHC certified surgery center. Incisions are created so the nasal structures can be visualized. Once all of the component parts to the nose are identified, the cartilage and bone are shaped to smooth a bump, define the tip, decrease the size of the nose, or correct the patient’s breathing.

A slight change to the bone, the upper cartilage, and the lower cartilage can produce significant changes in the appearance of the nose. Meticulous attention to their shaping and relationship is critical. Dr. Schneider prides himself on producing very natural nose job results that meet the patient’s expectations. The procedure typically takes 2 hours to perform, and at the conclusion of the procedure, a small plastic splint is applied to the nose. Most patients report that the recovery is not painful and though pain medication is prescribed, it is often not required.

The splint and sutures are removed 6 days following the Rhinoplasty procedure and most patients are able to return to work or school at that time. If there is any bruising, it usually disappears by the time the patient is able to return to work or school.

Open Rhinoplasty / Closed Rhinoplasty

There are two basic types of nose jobs: open and closed. In a closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision only on the inside of each side of the nose. This gives the surgeon access to cartilages and bone. The open nose job has a small hidden incision across the columella (the skin column separating the right and left side). With this approach, the surgeon can directly view how the cartilage will be shaped in its final position.

Revision Rhinoplasty

About 15% of patients nationwide require a revisional procedure following their rhinoplasty. If this is necessary, it is usually performed at least one year following the primary procedure. Patients often refer others who are dissatisfied with their results from another center to Dr. Schneider for their secondary and tertiary procedures.
