Injectables (Botox / Xeomin)
Botox® and Xeomin® are neuomodulator injectables that function by decreasing muscle function. Botox® Cosmetic is the only FDA approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s fee lines in adults.
Both Botox® and Xeomin® are targeted at the superficial muscles that produce wrinkles. They do not affect the nerve function to the muscle, they specifically act directly on the function of the muscle fibers themselves. As the muscle function decreases, so does the visibility of the wrinkles. Both injectables are produced from the same protein that is naturally produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Xeomin® is designed to be a smaller molecule. In Dr. Schneider’s experience, both Botox® and Xeomin® work similarly and at similar doses. There are some patients who find over time that Botox® may have lost some of its effectiveness, and in these patients, Xeomin® may be a reasonable alternative. Both injectables are offered at our practice for the same price.
The Botox® and Xeomin® injectable treatments are performed in our office in about 5 minutes. Most patients do not need any topical anesthetics though this is available if the patient chooses. For the average patient having their brow, 11 lines, and crows feet treated, Dr. Schneider utilizes 40 to 50 units. We typically use a strong dilution of the product so that patients can see their results lasting for 3-5 months. Results are fully evident within seven to ten days after treatment however, most patients see results in 24-48 hours. Wrinkles that are long standing or very deep will not completely disappear but patients are often pleased with the improvements.
Dr. Schneider performs all of the injectables himself as he likes to take an artistic approach and individually tailors each treatment to the patient. Most of our patients have their treatments performed 2-3 times per year in our AAAHC certified surgery center.
