What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)?

PRP (platelet rich plasma) is made from your own blood and used to rejuvenate facial tissues, decrease wrinkling, promote hair growth on the scalp. The procedure can also be used to promote healing in damaged tissues (tendonitis, muscle injuries, joint pains). During the PRP plastic surgery procedure, a small amount of blood is drawn from you in the same way as how a blood test would be performed. The blood is placed in a sterile tube that is then put into a centrifuge for 15 minutes. The centrifuge causes the different components of the blood to separate leaving a component called platelet rich plasma, or PRP.

Platelets are the cells in the blood that help tissue to heal and grow new cells. The platelet rich plasma, injected into specific areas of the skin, or deep tissues, acts as a matrix that promotes your own collagen to grow, regenerate and repair tissues, and can stimulate dormant hair follicles to grow. This thus acts to naturally smooth and tighten the skin, fill in the volume of the face, and promote hair growth of the scalp.

The procedure has a 30 year history demonstrating its benefits in orthopedic medicine, dentistry, reconstructive surgery. Over the last several years, platelet rich plasma has been demonstrated to be effective in dermatology, skin wound healing, and cosmetic facial rejuvenation.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) with Dr. Schneider

Dr. Schneider will often combine PRP with other techniques to further aid the effect. For example, PRP is often used with microneedling to decrease wrinkles and stretch marks. Platelet rich plasma injections are also used with scalp microneedling to help regrow hair. Sculptra can also be injected at the time of the PRP procedure to further enhance volume restoration of the face. The benefit of combining platelet rich plasma with other treatments is that it may enhance the result of other treatments, and it may decrease the number of treatments necessary.
